After five years of domination in the Gears of War scene, the core of the roster previously known as OpTic Gaming has announced a move over to Halo Infinite for the 2020-21 HCS Season.
The team's Filipino captain, Gilbert "Xplosive" Rojo has been playing Gears competitively for over seven years, joining with Brian "SoLuRs" Valenzuela in GoW 3 and Billy "MentaL" Putnam for Gears of War: Ultimate Edition.
These three together won Pro League Season 1 for GoW: UE and the MLG NA Open in 2016 before joining OpTic Gaming for the launch of Gears of War 4. Since then, the team has been utterly dominant, winning almost everything there was to win in the game. This included 10 out of 12 Majors during the 2017 and 2018 Seasons.
For 2019 and the launch of Gears of War 5 the trio moved to NRG Esports and, despite being the top North American seed, exited both pre-COVID Majors in the quarter-finals. By the end of 2020, only Xplosive was left in the team as SoLuRs had left for a rival team while MentaL left to spend a year in the Call of Duty League playing for the LA Guerrillas.
These three have now reunited with a new name of "toni" to compete in Halo Infinite. The roster is org-less right now, however, Xplosive is signed individually by eUnited. It is not clear at the moment if the roster will be attending the Raleigh Major.
With the move announced just over a week ago, the roster has played in both the NA Open Cup #2 and the Major qualifiers managing to take a map away from SSG in their lone big-name matchup.
While the team is unlikely to take the Halo world by storm, the move is still a significant one in console esports and shows Halo Infinite's effect on the scenes in just its early days.
The move also further shows OpTic Gaming's presence in Halo, with this being the second esports dynasty alongside the current Sentinels roster that used to play under the OG brand, while the organization's newest lineup seems to be the team to beat at Raleigh.
